Welcome to Red Rock Enterprises, LLC
Did you ever wonder why you are like you are? From time to time I do. This weekend I read the book "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. Randy is the cancer patient who delivered the now famous lecture at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in September 2007. If you have not heard the lecture I encourage you to go to www.thelastlecture.com and listen to it.
I also encourage you to read the book; it is well worth the $21.95 price. (If you read the book, turn to page 46 as there is one quote that I firmly believe in with all of my heart: "I don't believe in the no-win scenario!") In the book, Randy reflected on his upbringing as a child, and some of his experiences in life. He was born in 1960, a year earlier than I was. His parents had much of the same values as mine did. He recalled the moon landing of Apollo 11. I can also remember watching the event on CBS news with Walter Cronkite, sitting on the couch in our living room with my mother, father and sister, all of us staring at the small black and white set as Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon. The book induced me to look back and remember my mother telling me that, someday, I would thank her for making me listen.
Well, that day did arrive and yes, the discipline my parents practiced on me as I was growing up did pay benefits. Thanks mom and dad!! The book also stressed the importance of having dreams. As I look back, I remember doing a lot of dreaming as a kid., and yes I still dream today. I encourage my son to dream, also.
So, you ask, what do I dream about today? Well, I dream that someday Red Rock will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with offices located throughout the world. I even envision one on Wall Street, in Manhattan. It's a big dream and a long shot, but who ever thought that the largest employer in America, Wal-Mart, would start out as a mom-and-pop business, founded and based in Arkansas? And Red Rock, like Wal-Mart, still operates with a philosophy that doesn't forget the people who helped it get to wherever it was that it was ultimately going.

FSC Certification Continues...
Last week, everyone at Red Rock continued to work very hard towards our FSC certification. We are very committed to this process, and firmly believe in all of the FSC principals. We are looking forward to the day when we can offer the extra value of FSC certified wood to our customers.

Log Yard Flow...

The flow of wood in and out of the log yard was very slow the first part of the week, then unbelievably strong the latter part of the week. Once again, thanks to all of the contractors, truckers and suppliers who make this possible. We have been able to meet the needs of all of our customers and we want to thank THEM for their business and the trust they've placed in us.
We were also fortunate to obtain a couple of new suppliers last week. Thanks and welcome to the Red Rock family!!

| Market Report...
The word out there now is quota's on logs and pulpwood are in place at many locations. There are only a couple of mills out there that do not have an adequate supply of logs and pulpwood. Oh the joys of summertime wood supply!!!
One bright spot is the pallet manufacturers. There seems to be a slight pickup in their business. Some are even reporting strong orders for May, which is really positive. I'm also beginning to hear that some mills are now starting to slowly move some of their backlog of KD lumber. While they don't have a lot of pricing power, the fact that the backlog is starting to move is a good sign. There is also some talk in the market place that the oil and commodities bubble is about to burst and that the dollar may be bottoming out. If that happens, we should see some relief in oil prices.
All of this has been hammering the marketplace for what our industry produces.

CONSUMER ALERT Stop The Junk!!!
Americans receive about 100 billion pieces of junk mail annually. (Lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret alone sends out about 350 million catalogs each year.) Now lawmakers in 18 states are considering bills that would create a Do Not Mail list, similar to the federal Do Not Call list that bars telemarketing phone calls. "No one is obligated to join the registry." says Will Craven of the nonprofit group ForestEthics, which supports the list. "But Americans who find junk mail wasteful and annoying are demanding a choice." The U.S. Postal Service objects to the proposal laws because catalog and mail fees help offset a decline in revenue. And many businesses argue that catlogs are essential for generating sales.

| Should The U.S. Boycott The Beijing Games?
In response to China's crackdown on pro-Tibet sympathizers and its continued support of the Sudanese genocide in Darfur, pressure is mounting on the U.S. to boycott this summer's Olympics in Beijing. The leaders of Poland and the Czech Republic And Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany all have said they won't be attending the opening ceremonies.
How effective are boycotts? In 1980, the U.S. and more than 50 other nations (including, ironically China) stayed away from the Olympics in Moscow to portest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Says Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was the national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter in 1980. "The boycott was successful because it ruined what was intendeed to be a great Soviet propaganda show.
International Olmpic Committee member Anita DeFrantz disagrees. "a boycott cannot accomplish anything except hurting athletes," says DeFrantz, who won a bronze medal for women's rowing at the 1976 Olympics but could not compete in 1980 due to the boycott. "My mission since 1980 has been to prevent athletes from ever being used for someone else's wishes." Should the U.S. boycott the Beijing games?

Independent Research Finds FSC to be Most Effective Certification Option for Sustainable Forest Management
STANDARDS ON GMOs AND PLANTATIONS CONSIDERED IMPORTANT
|
|
New research conducted by Montreal-based management consultants ÉEM Inc. and released this month by environmental publishing advocates Markets Initiative shows FSC to be the most effective certification system for achieving sustainable forest management in Canada.
Unlike the other certification systems, namely CSA, SFI and PEFC, FSC is the only one that prohibits the use of genetically modified trees, prevents the conversion of natural forest to plantations and requires a precautionary approach to the management of areas with high conservation value.
"Forest certification schemes have competed for recognition in the market place for years, but this research clearly shows FSC as being the ideal choice when it comes to sustainability," said Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Vancouver-based Markets Initiative, which presented the top level findings at an industry conference in late September. "Given the growth of green markets in Canada and around the world, this research can serve as a clear guide for the increasing number of customers looking for environmental solutions."
More than 200 book, magazine and newspaper publishers in Canada have developed environmental purchasing polices with Markets Initiative. These policies aim to help safeguard ancient and endangered forests and give preference to papers with maximized recycled and agricultural residue content, and virgin fiber from FSC-certified forests. Because of the market demand created by these publishers, more than 50 new papers have been developed with ecological attributes and close to a million trees have been saved by publishers printing on Ancient Forest Friendly and eco-friendly papers. Building on this shift, in September, the Ontario government developed a paper purchasing policy that gives preference to recycled content and FSC virgin fiber.
"Being the only forest certification comparison that looks at the four North American schemes as they apply in Canada, we hope those in the private and public sectors will use it as a resource as they move forward with environmental paper initiatives," said Paul MacLean, President of ÉEM Inc.
ÉEM's findings also show the use of recycled content is paramount to any credible environmental solution.
ÉEM Inc. is a management consultancy offering leadership in sustainable business practices to a variety of industrial and institutional clients in Québec, across Canada and worldwide.
Markets Initiative works to protect the world's forests, biodiversity and climate by shifting the consumption patterns of industrial paper consumers to eco-friendly options. The organization works collaboratively throughout the entire paper supply chain.
