Once again I have proven to myself and others that every week you can learn something.  Last Friday, as I walked into the office at the usual 6 am I found myself pausing and looking at the Sucessories Posters that are in the entry way to the RR office.  Visit the site....
http://www.successories.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.home/home.cfm

There are 2 posters and the floor mat which really recapped my week.

One is a picture of a waterfall dumping into a lake with the saying "New Beginnings.  In life what sometimes appears to be the end is really a new beginning."

The other one is a picture of a ship with the saying "Risk  A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships were made for."

The floor mat says "If we don't take care of the customer someone else will."

Let me elaborate on each one of them.

Last week I experienced some horrible customer service.  I have learned a lot from this experience, and hope I never make the mistakes this vendor did.  Last week without any notice the cable TV in the office, and my dad's house suddenly changed.  The basic package was reduced from 50 channels to about 12 channels.  This was all done without any advance notice, and when I called, it took over 24 hours to get a return phone call.  While this was not the end of the world for the office or for my dad, it was a major tragedy for a neighbor with a 5 year old child that was not able to watch her favorite Disney cartoon.  When I finally did get a return phone call, I was told I could take this opportunity to upgrade to their digital service (double the cost), and get back the channels that I lost.  Well this was not a hard decision for me, with such poor service I decided to call Direct TV and have it installed ASAP.  Hence this goes back to the door mat....

Risk:

Every day every small business owner takes some type of risk, and I am no exception.  I have been told by my wife that there is no need for me to go to Vegas, because there is more action in my office during the day than there is at the MGM on the Strip at Vegas.  Sometimes you take a risk in order to try to help someone out.  Most of the time this works out well for everyone, but not always, sometimes you get burned.  Well last week I got burned because I took a chance trying to help someone out.  Will this experience cause me to not take a chance and help someone in the future, no it will not.  Last week when I got burned, I responded to the situation quickly, severed the relationship (their loss), and have moved on.  The sad part is that GREED was the root of everything falling apart.  This has happened in the past and every time I get burned, it is because of greed, and usually 2-3 months down the road the bridge burner has went by the wayside...... and I am still here.......  I did pay attention to what mom and dad told me growing up........

New Beginnings:

Tomorrow Thursday May 8 RR is entering into a new beginning.  We are starting today our FSC audit.  Last Friday I had delegated a ton of work to everyone in preparation for the audit, and had reviewed countless documents.  I came to a point about 2:00 in the afternoon that I was exhausted, so I disappeared to the little cot that is in the upstairs of the office.  The next thing I know it was 3:30 and there were logs in the yard to scale and everyone was laughing at me because I had taken a nap.  This is the first time this ever happened, and I am sure no one will let me forget it.  I am hoping that by the end of May RR will be able to offer to their customers a value added product FSC certified wood.

I can tell you that I firmly believe in the New Beginnings poster, because I bought it the day after I got left my suit and tie.

"Facing The Giants...Do Your Very Best!!"
giants I would like to recommend a short inspirational video clip from the movie "Facing The Giants."
Go to www.youtube.com and type, facing the giants in the search line. The video clip will be the first one on your left. After you view it, show it to your employees, and to your family, and then challenge yourself to do "your very best" during this demanding economic environment.

Hot Items We Need Right Now...

18' Poplar Logs; 10"+ Diameter

25' Red Oak Logs; 13"+ Diameter

Log Yard Flow

The flow of logs and pulpwood was extremely slow all week.  The effects of wet weather and quotas throughout the industry slowed production in both logs and pulpwood.

Market Report

The market continues to be very challenging.  Non farm payrolls declined for the 4th month in a row, and the economy appears to be in a recession.  The Federal Reserve cut rates another 25 basis points and has signaled that this may be it for a while.  I also feel this is the end of this rate cut cycle as long term rates ticked up after the Fed cut short term rates.  This is a good indication the end is here as I look back into the "old days" as a banker.

Spring Charity Support Winners!!!!
First I would like to thank everyone for "cutting the coupon" and returning it to our office. The amount of response was overwhelming and I was very pleasantly surprised. THANKS to everyone who sent in a coupon. Now the important part, the winners:

First Place ($100): Randy & Diann Frazee and their favorite Charity: Winchester Medical Center NICU. This is a particulary important charity for Randy and Diann because their grandson, Coy Russell Mayle, spent the first few days of his life there. The NICU at Winchester Medical Center is a 12-bed level III unit and a 4-bed step-down unit for a total of 16 beds. The unit is comprised of an all RN staff specially educated to care for moderately to critically ill neonates. Admission criteria to the NICU includes 26 weeks gestation and greater. The NICU has two board-certified Neonatologists and six Neonatal Nurse Practitioners with one NNP in-house 24/7. Services of the unit include a neonatal transport team, nitric oxide therapy and oscillator ventilation.

Second Place ($50): Donald & Diana McKenzie and their favorite charity: Garrett County Lighthouse. This is a wonderful organization which specializes in assisting and meeting the needs of our citizens who are mentally challenged. The organization provides various activites for the participants to get involved in such as craft workshops and shopping trips. Donald & Diana are especially proud to support Garrett County Lighthouse because of their "home town" location in Oakland Maryland and their contribution to making our community a better place for everyone.  Red Rock is happy to help such a wonderful organization!!

Third Place ($50): Larry K. Wright and his favorite charity: St. Baldricks Foundation. This foundation  is the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family. Visit the website http://www.stbaldricks.org/#!!!! Red Rock is pleased to support such a generous charity and help in the effort of shaving the way to conquering kid's cancer!!!
